Scientists Make Huge Breast Cancer Breakthroughs

Saturday, May 19, 2012

Scientists have made huge breast cancer breakthroughs including mapping 21 cancer codes and discovering how the disease evolves. These breakthroughs are critical for not only diagnosis of cancer but treating it as well. Read more below.
Scientists have mapped the complete genetic codes of 21 breast cancers and created a catalogue of the mutations that accumulate in breast cells, raising hopes that the disease may be able to be spotted earlier and treated more effectively in future.
The research, the first of its kind, untangles the genetic history of how cancer evolves, allowing scientists to identify mutational patterns that fuel the growth of breast tumours, and start to work out the processes behind them.
“These findings have implications for our understanding of how breast cancers develop over the decades before diagnosis in adults and might help to find possible targets for improved diagnosis or therapeutic intervention in the future,” said Mike Stratton, who led the research team.
Breast cancer kills more than 450,000 women a year worldwide and is the most common cancer among women, accounting for 16 percent of all cases, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
A study last year by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in the United States found that global breast cancer cases have more than doubled in just three decades, from 641,000 cases in 1980 to 1.6 million cases in 2010 – a pace that far exceeds global population growth.
“This is the first time we’ve been able to delve fully into breast cancer genomes in such a thorough way,” said Peter Campbell, head of cancer genetics and genomics at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, where the studies were led.
The work had given scientists “a full panoramic view of the cancer genome” and helped them identify “mutational patterns rather than individual mutations in specific genes”, he added.
DNA MUTATIONS
“We’ve known for many years now that all cancers are due to abnormalities of DNA…that occur in every single cell of the body over the course of a lifetime,” said Stratton.
“But although we’ve known that, it’s remarkable how rudimentary our knowledge is about what the processes are that cause these abnormalities, these mutations in our DNA.”
Stratton’s team sequenced the genomes of the 21 breast cancers and catalogued all the mutations. They found five major processes that cause one letter of code to be changed to another letter. Genetic code comes in four DNA letters, A,C,G and T.
Stratton said one of the most exciting findings was that one of these processes is characterised by small pockets of massively mutated regions of the genome.
This sudden “storm” of mutations is often seen in breast cancers, he explained in an audio briefing.
While his team don’t fully understand the process behind these storms, they think it may be down to components of the cell whose normal function is to edit, or mutate, DNA.
“What we believe…is that sometimes in normal cells…this stops functioning properly and over-functions. It causes too many mutations and the accumulation of those mutations pushes the cell along the line to become cancer.”
The team found that these and other mutations accumulate in breast cells over many years, initially slowly, but picking up greater momentum as genetic damage builds up.
By the time the breast cancers are large enough to be diagnosed, they are made up of a number of genetically related families of cells, with one family dominating the cancer, Stratton explained.
Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust which helped fund the work, said the results showed how scientists are starting to see the landscape of mutations in breast cancer “in something approaching its full complexity”.
“As this work continues, we can hope to understand how breast cancer develops and thus how it might be treated more effectively,” he said in a statement.

Drake Reveals Doubts About Making Hip Hop In His Thirties

Drake surmises that he'll bow out of the Rap game before he hits middle age.

Much like Eminem and Lil Wayne before him, Drake has misgivings about rapping into his later years. And though Shady, who turns 40 in October of this year, has yet to hang up the mic, Drizzy sounds fairly certain that he will exit the Hip Hop game earlier than some of his fellow emcees.
In an interview with i-D Magazine, the Young Money emcee addressed the matter without putting an expiration date on anything.
The topic came out of a discussion about balancing relationships and making music. "I personally think that when I find that person and when it is established that we're gonna enter a serious relationship-I mean I don't even know if I'll still be making Rap music. I don't know how long I necessarily want to make Rap music for."
"You know, there are artists who are thirty-five and up that still make Rap and that still works for them," continued Drake. "I don't know if I want to be that guy. A lot of my music is about being young and figuring it all out. I don't know if I can still make my brand of music when I'm up there. Maybe I'll be just acting or whatever it is.
"I plan to make as much music as I can until a story from Drake doesn't impact you as it used to. I guess I'll find my way someone else."

T.I. Contemplating Retirement??

T.I. explains his problems with the Hip Hop game.

It's been over a decade since T.I. dropped his debut I'm Serious, and he's thinking about leaving the game. During an interview with Power 105's The Breakfast Club, Tip said that he's built a Hip Hop empire with Grand Hustle and that if his artists begin to outsell him, then he has good reason to exit the game.
"This is what everyone fails to realize. I want out. I want out, man," he said. "What the game is going to and what has evolved into from a personality standpoint, it goes against what I represent. What I embody, this game contradicts that. I want out. I’m in it because I love music and I have obligations, contractually."
Tip addressed how the content of music has changed over the years, and how a rapper can spit lyrics about a life they don't actually live and succeed. He says that if those artists begin to outsell him, then he has no problem ducking from the game.
"It was at one time, this music was about speaking to the people who felt like you feel. Now, the people I’m speaking to, they don’t necessarily feel like how I feel. In my day, if you were rapping about something you weren’t really living, that was a strike against you. You were held accountable. Nowadays, nobody even expects you to live up to the things you rap about. That goes against what I represent, what I stand for. So if they outsell me, then that’s just all the more better for me to fade to the back and cross my legs on my desk."

Lil Boosie’s Daughter Iviona Rapping; Plans to Hit the Studio With Dad

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Lil’ Boosie’s daughter, Iviona Hatch, is finally recovering from several tumultuous months during which her father was fighting for his life and freedom.
After Lil’ Boosie’s jury reached a non-guilty verdict in a Lousiana courthouse last week, Iviona wasted no time telling DJ Smallz that she has a blossoming music career and is seeking to work with her father upon his release.
“I’m feeling like – I ain’t been having no appetite – I ain’t have an appetite Friday, or none Saturday really, and first thing when he comes home,  we gettin’ in the booth, get in the booth, and get that money,” Iviona explained. “They just gonna see me rock the mic, and they gonna see what I’m really here for, and they gonna see a mini version of Boosie. That’s what they gonna see, a mini version of Boosie,” Iviona said.
When asked if she had any songs with Lil’ Boosie, Iviona replied, ”Not yet, but you think my songs go hard? But put both of us together, and it’s gonna go super hard.”

"The Game" Pooch Hall and Tia Mowery Fired???

Clutch your remote. The time clock has run out for Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall and they will not be returning for the next season of “The Game.”Hiphollywood.comfirst reported that an exclusive source informed them Tia and Pooch were given walking papers and would not be back as their characters, Melanie and Derwin, for the next season of the series which has already been renewed. At the time, the news was just a rumor, but then radio host Dede McGuire tweeted that Tia told her she was fired from the show and then Tia sent her own tweet confirming the news:
“Just wanted to let all my fans know that I will not be returning to The Game for season 6. It was an incredible run and I had lots of fun.”
We know fans haven’t been thrilled about this season of the show or its shift since moving from the CW to BET, but these are the central characters in the series. Maybe Tia and Pooch will be replaced, which would be awkward, but it would seem even weirder if they just disappeared. Wendy Raquel Robinson could definitely carry the show as Tasha Mack but her supporting cast? We’re not so sure. So far Pooch hasn’t commented on the situation but the network reportedly wants both actors back to film an end to their storyline. We’ll definitely be tuning in to see how they wrap this season June 5.

Brown died Wednesday at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. Hospital spokesman Gary Stephenson confirmed Brown had died after a hospital stay that began April 18.
Brown's passing comes about a week after the Washington Post confirmed that the musician, considered  the pioneer of Go-Go music, had been hospitalized with pneumonia.
Brown's 1970 hit, "Bustin' Loose," hit #1 on the MCA charts. The song was later sampled in the 2002 Nelly song, "Hot in Herre," which won Nelly a Grammy.
He had recently postponed numerous shows due to his failing health.
“Go-go is D.C.’s very own unique contribution to the world of pop music, and Chuck Brown was regarded as Go-go’s creator and, arguably, its most legendary artist,” D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said in a statement. “Today is a very sad day for music lovers the world over, but especially in the District of Columbia. Without Chuck Brown, the world – and our city – will be a different place. What a loss."
Thanks to Brown and his deep, gravelly voice, go-go music was uniquely identified with Washington. That's where he continued to play the city's club circuit late in life.

Pilar Sanders Requests $25,000 Monthly Child Support, Guess How Much Judge Orders Deion Sanders to Pay?

Tuesday afternoon, was pay day of sorts, as a judge ruled that Deion Sanders will pay his strange wife, Pilar Sanders$14,000 in child support (the couple have three children together) and mortgage payments. Unfortunately, this is far less than Pilar has requested. During their hearing, Pilar’s camp suggested that Deion’s net worth was $250,000,000, (Deion reportedly chuckled when this amount was mentioned) and requested that she be paid $24,000 per month. If you’re wondering how Pilar came up with the $24k amount, here’s a list of her monthly expenses:
  • $2000 food/restaurants
  • $900 clothing
  • $450 personal care, haircuts
  • $500 school lunches
  • $750 child care
  • $500 cell phones
  • $1000 entertainment and events
  • $2000 children’s lessons
Meanwhile, Deion claims that he makes $1 million dollars for his NFL gig and claims that Pilar is hiding money from her acting and modeling jobs. Click here for more details and drama. P.S. Based on who or what we assume Deion makes, is $14,000 a month sufficient for Pilar to care for his three children?

A Homeless Man Reportedly Stabs Man in Library for Watching Porn

A homeless man reportedly stabbed another man in a New York City library because he was viewing pornography, fire and police sources said.
The 56-year-old attacker was with his wife on the second floor of the Brooklyn Heights Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library when he spotted the video on the screen of a computer operated by a 52-year-old man Tuesday evening, sources told the New York Daily News.
“He was with his wife and he accused the other guy of looking at porn,” one police source said. “The guy looking at porn picked up a chair and hits him. The guy who was offended said, ‘I have a knife,’ and stabs him in the chest.”
The victim, who remained conscious, was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is expected to survive the attack. Charges against the alleged stabber were pending late Tuesday, police told the newspaper.

U.S Troops Sold Weapons To Street Gangs

Melissa Nash
Dozens of U.S. Marines and sailors swiped nearly $2 million worth of government goods, according to reports, allegedly selling them to street gangs, foreigners and other big bidders.
The stash has included assault rifles, night-vision goggles and $800 flashlights, investigators found as part of a two-year probe.
“This is some damn fine police work,” Ed Buice, spokesman for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, told The Associated Press on Tuesday, adding that “this is not the first time such crimes have occurred with military members selling government-issued combat gear.”
But this latest scheme, which is concentrated at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, highlights a pervasive problem: There were reportedly 66 investigations involving 47 active-duty Marines and sailors and 21 civilians, according to reports.
The shady side business came to light after NCIS officials received a tip.
“This is guys stealing stuff and selling it at garage sales and out of the back of their cars,” Buice said.
And there were also transactions made through popular websites, including eBay and craigslist, according to The Daily News of Jacksonville, N.C., which first reported the story.
Among the buyers were reportedly people in China and street gangs in North Carolina.
About half of the cases have already been settled in court, with some of the suspects pleading guilty, Buice said. Exactly how many of them admitted to the thefts and for how long they’ve been occuring wasn’t immediately clear.
Last week, Capt. Donald Pump Jr., was found guilty and sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and was dismissed from the Marines Corps, The Daily News in North Carolina reported.
The newspaper said other military branches are now conducting similar investigations.
Given the widespread allegations, observers questioned how the military could allow its equipment to go unaccounted for.
“Who’s minding the store?” Philip Cave, a Washington military attorney, told MSNBC.
“Somehow these people figured out how to beat the system,” he continued.
